As we settle into our fall routine, other aspect of our lives seem to be getting organized again, too. We have started eating meals on a more predictable schedule, and the meals are more balanced and healthy. With earlier mornings, everyone is trying to get to bed earlier, and some of us who are compulsive that way are jotting everything down. Lists, schedules, calendars, they're all getting a lot of attention these days.
Fiscal belt tightening naturally seems to go along with all of that. We are trying to get back on a budget, pay off some bills, and just generally have a tighter grasp on where it's all going.
As part of all of this getting organized and saving money, we've been eating through our pantry. We've pulled out grains and beans from the back of the pantry and used them to build meals. And, although, we purged much of the food in our freezer when we lost power this summer, we still have a few meals there, too. So far, we've made a rice salad with Italian black rice, roti and chick pea and potato curry, and lentil and feta salad. Chloe found ice cream cones in the pantry and wihte peach sorbet in the freezer so we had those for dessert a few nights ago. Cuban black beans and spinach gnocchi are coming soon.
The whole family has gotten into the act, and it feels satisfying, this belt tightening.
What's in your pantry?
Yes, we need to do this as well. Happily, like you we have some treats as well as the required dried beans in our pantry, too!

That reminds me -- we have a peach pie in the freezer, too!

I do this about twice a year-- with the freezer, usually before key power losing times! With the pantry, it is because I am trying to turn over the beans and all before they get too old! So much easier now that it is getting cooler!
