Olivia has always loved strong flavors. I remember the first sip of grapefruit juice she had, she crinkled up her face into that I-just-ate-something-sour look that only children can make. Boy do I wish I had a picture of that. Then she immediately asked for another sip. She loves to suck on lemons and has always loved pickles and olives.
Not all of us are so fearless. Some of us take a bit of sugar in our lemonade. Or on our grapefruit.
Gabe and I were served brown sugared grapefruits at a bed and breakfast long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far, away. It is such a simple dish -- you really don't even need a recipe -- but the sum is more than the total of the parts. The broiled brown sugar balances the sourness of the grapefruit so that each bite is a hit of caramelized sweetness cut with a punch.
Did you notice those wonderful little fingers helping me? They belong to my nephew, Denny, and I think there is nothing cuter than those sweet dimpled fingers. I had to nibble a few along with the grapefruit. It seems like a long time since my wee ones had those fingers, and I miss those days. How lucky I am that Denny lives nearby and his parents let me borrow him once in a while.
Second Helping: Taco Frittata
Brown Sugar Crusted Grapefruit
Serves 2
5 minutes preparation time
5 minutes cooking time
1 whole grapefruit
approximately 2 teaspoons brown sugar
Move an oven rack to the highest slot and preheat the oven to broil.
Cut the grapefruit in half through its equator. With a grapefruit knife, separate the individual sections and remove any seeds. Sprinkle about a teaspoon of brown sugar over each half.
Place the grapefruit halves on a cookie sheet and place them under the broiler until the grapefruit and sugar are lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Cool slightly before eating. For a last dash of sweetness, when you have finished eating the sections, squeeze all of the juice out of the grapefruit into your bowl and drink it right out of the bowl.
